Generally in Competitive Examinations Like IBPS, UPSC, SSC exams 1 - 2 questions will be asked in the Quantitative Aptitude Section. Use the formulas given below and solve Time and Distance Problems and score marks in the exam. Are you preparing for IBPS CWE Quantitative Aptitude Section? try to remember these Time and Distance Important Formulas for Speed Calculation.

## Time and Distance Important Formulas

Formula for Speed:

• Speed=$\left ( \frac{Distance}{Time} \right )$

Formula for Time:

• Time=$\left ( \frac{Distance}{Speed} \right )$

Distance=Speed * Time

We have already known formulas for how to calculate Speed, Time, Distance, now we will see formulas for how to convert speed in Kilometre Per Hour (KMPH) to Metre Per Second (MPS)

4. Formula for Converting Speed km/hr to m/Sec

• $x km/hr = \left(x*\frac{5}{18}\right)m/sec$

5. Formula for Converting Speed form m/Sec to km/hr

• $x m/sec = \left(x*\frac{18}{5}\right)km/h$

6. If the ratio of the speeds of A and B is a : b, then the ratio of the the times taken by then to cover the same distance is

• \begin{aligned} \frac{1}{a}:\frac{1}{b} & or & b:a \end{aligned}

7. Suppose a man covers a certain distance at x km/hr and an equal distance at y km/hr. Then, the average speed during the whole journey is

• \begin{aligned} \frac{2xy}{x+y} \end{aligned}

### Time and Distance Aptitude Questions Answers

1. Ramu crosses a 600 meter long bridge in 5 minutes. What is the speed in Km/hr?

1. 6.2 km/hr
2. 7.2 km/hr
3. 8.2 km/hr
4. 9.2 km/hr
5. None of these

Explanation:

\begin{aligned} Speed = \frac{Distance}{Time} \\ Distance = 650 meter \\ Time = \text{5 minutes} = 300 sec \\ Speed = \frac{600}{300} = 2 m/sec \\ => 2*\frac{18}{5} km/hr = 7.2 km/hr \end{aligned}

2. Speed of a train is 40 meters per second. It can cross a pole in 20 seconds. What is the length of train ?

1. 400 meters
2. 600 meters
3. 800 meters
4. 200 meters
5. None of these

Explanation:

Train length = 40 * 20 = 800 metres

3. A Man travelled a distance of 61 km in 9 hours. He travelled partly on foot at 4 km/hr and partly on bicycle at 9 km/hr. What is the distance travelled on foot?

1. 16 km
2. 14 km
3. 12 km
4. 10 km
5. None of these

Explanation:

Let the time in which he travelled on foot = x hour
Time for travelling on bicycle = (9 - x) hr
Distance = Speed * Time, and Total distance = 61 km
So,
4x + 9(9-x) = 61
=> 5x = 20
=> x = 4
So distance traveled on foot = 4(4) = 16 km

4. A man in a train notices that he can count 41 telephone posts in one minute. If they are known to be 50 metres apart, then at what speed is the train travelling?

1. 60 km/hr
2. 100 km/hr
3. 110 km/hr
4. 120 km/hr
5. None of these

Explanation:

Number of gaps between 41 poles = 40
So total distance between 41 poles = 40*50 = 2000 meter = 2 km
In 1 minute train is moving 2 km/minute.
Speed in hour = 2*60 = 120 km/hour

5. Laxman travels equal distances with speed of 3 km/hr, 4 km/hr and 5 km/hr and takes a total of 47 minutes. Find the total distance?

1. 3 km
2. 4 km
3. 6 km
4. 9 km
5. None of these

Explanation:

Let the distance be 3x km then,

\begin{aligned} \frac{x}{3} +\frac{x}{4} +\frac{x}{5} = \frac{47}{60} \\ \frac{47x}{60} =\frac{47}{60} \\ x = 1 \end{aligned} So total distance = 3*1 = 3 Km
